Famous TikTok star Om Fahad has been shot dead in the center of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
Fahad had almost half a million followers on the social media platform where she became famous for light-hearted videos dancing to Iraqi music.
The Iraqi Interior Ministry confirmed in a statement that a "woman known on social networking sites" had been killed by "unknown assailants". The authorities have launched an investigation into the killing.
Fahad was shot in her car by a single armed person on a motorbike. She was in the parked car outside of her home when the murderer walked up the car and killed her, with the act being caught on CCTV.
Om Fahad had angered the government before
Fahad's real name is Ghufran Sawadi and she died in the Zayouna district of Baghdad. It is believed that the attacker was pretending to deliver food to the car. Her assistant Nour al Suwaidi was injured in the attack.
The influencer was sentenced to six months in prison in February last year for sharing videos that a court ruled contained "indecent speech that undermines modesty and public morality".
This led to the Iraqi government launching a campaign in 2023 to clamp down on social media activity that they disagreed with.
"This type of content is no less dangerous than organised crime," the ministry declared in a promotional video which asked the public to help by reporting such content.
"It is one of the causes of the destruction of the Iraqi family and society."
