University Academic Staff Union on Saturday, April 1, directed their members not work on Monday, April 3.

Speaking to the media, the union Secretary General Constantine Wasonga lamented that the staff were yet to receive their March salaries.

He called on all public university staff to camp at the finance offices of the institutions until they received their salaries.

“I want to order all members of academic staff that come Monday, if you have not received your salary, don’t work.

“Go to your various finance offices, and wait there until you are paid,” Wesonga stated.

At the same time, the union demanded that the government releases all Vice Chancellors who were appointed in 2022 out of office.

Justifying the position, Wasonga stated that their stay deterred development in the universities.

They further demanded that the Public Service Commission advertises for vacancies of the Vice Chancellor positions.

“These vice chancellors ought to have gone for terminal leave. They have refused to leave and therefore the appointment of new vice chancellors cannot take place effectively.

“What interest do they have in our public universities? Why can't they go on leave so that the councils and the public service can advertise for new vice-chancellors?’ the chairman added.

If their demands are not met, the university staff union members stated that all university staff members across the country would down their tools.

On February 28,  the Public Service Commission (PSC) published an advertisement in local dailies calling for applications for the positions of VC and Deputy Vice Chancellors in 10 public universities.

"Pursuant to the provisions of Section 35(1)(a)(v) of the Universities Act  2012, PSC invites applications from the suitability qualified persons for the following vacant positions in public universities

"All applications should reach the Commission on or before March 20, 2023, by 5 p.m.," the notice read in part.
