At least five people died on Saturday night, April 1, in a road accident in the Amabuko area along the Kisii-Kilgoris highway after a 14-seater Public Service Vehicle (PSV) was hit by an oncoming trailer.

Masaba North sub-county police commander Robert Kinywa confirmed the accident and indicated that the driver of the matatu attempted to swerve to avoid hitting a boda boda before colliding with the trailer.

The matatu was heading toward Sotik area while the trailer was heading to the Kisii direction from Sotik.

Among the five who succumbed to injuries include two minors, a high School student and another who died alongside his mother.

“Five other people were seriously injured and they were rushed to nearby hospitals including Ichuni Mission Hospital,” the sub-county police commander stated.

The five bodies were moved to Kisii Teaching And Referal Hospital (KTRH) hospital mortuary.

At the same time, Keroka OCPD Peter Ndambiri intimated that it is paramount for motorists to drive within the speed limit and exercise caution at all times.

"The road is under construction and at the same time slippery during the rainy season. Drivers operating both private and public have to be extra careful," he noted.

The police boss cautioned drivers to be careful especially during the rainy season to avoid more fatalities on the road.

The tragedy happened a day after at least 17 people died after a Pwani University bus collided head-on with a 14-seater Matatu around the Kayole area in Naivasha on Thursday, March 30.

Reports indicated that the bus was ferrying students for a games championship scheduled to take place in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

One of the crash survivors revealed that the driver raised an alarm after realising that the vehicle's brakes were faulty when the bus approached the Kayole area in Naivasha.

The survivor added that the driver also went out of his way to save their lives by attempting to bring the bus to a stop.

These efforts, however, proved futile after the bus collided with the matatu before overturning on the drainage adjustment on the Nairobi - Nakuru Highway.
