Research has just been published by the World Meteorological Organization that a single lightning strike in Oklahoma was the longest single flash ever recorded.This strike of lighting measured 200 miles long. This horizontal bolt of lighting stretched from near Tulsa to near the Oklahoma Panhandle.The research just published references a lighting strike from June 20, 2007.This same organization has also determined the world record for the longest duration for a lightning strike is 7.74 seconds. This occurred in southern France in 2012.These record strikes were recorded using sensitive radio frequencies used in the detection of lightning.
