List of 15 NATO Member Countries That Back Palestine's Bid for UN Membership

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA total of 15 NATO member countries backed Palestine in its bid to become a full member of the United Nations (UN). This support comes after the UN General Assembly on May 10, 2024, adopted a resolution to provide extended rights for Palestine at the UN.

Quoting Reuters, the UN General Assembly acknowledged that Palestine had met the requirements to become a member of the UN. They also recommended that the UN Security Council "reconsider the matter favorably."

Uni Arab Emirates proposed the UN General Assembly resolution, noting a deep concern regarding the US veto on the previous bid on April 18 at the UN Security Council.

In a vote carried out by the 193-member General Assembly, 143 UN member states expressed support for the resolution deeming Palestine to have met the requirements to become the 194th member of the UN.

Meanwhile, nine countries rejected the bid, and 25 countries abstained. The nine countries that reject the notion are Argentina, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, the United States, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, and Palau.

Support for Palestine to become a full member of the UN also comes after seven months into Israel's aggression in Gaza. One of the triggers was the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, an action considered illegal by the UN.

However, just a General Assembly resolution is insufficient for Palestine to become a member of the UN. Palestine needs approval from the Security Council and then from the General Assembly to gain full membership.

The May 10 vote by the UN General Assembly will only reflect global support for Palestine, without providing full membership. However, the proposed draft resolution will grant several additional rights and privileges to Palestine starting September 2024, short of voting rights.

So, which NATO countries support Palestine’s bid for full UN membership? Here is the list:

  1. Türkiye
  2. Norway
  3. Poland
  4. Portugal
  5. Slovakia
  6. Luxembourg
  7. Montenegro
  8. Slovenia
  9. Spain
  10. Belgium
  11. Denmark
  12. Estonia
  13. France
  14. Greek
  15. Iceland
